The President of the United States is the head of state and head of government, serving as commander-in-chief of the armed forces and leader of the executive branch. Presidents are elected to 4-year terms and may serve a maximum of two terms under the 22nd Amendment (ratified 1951). The presidency has been held by 47 individuals since George Washington took the oath of office on April 30, 1789.
